Government tests have found asbestos in crayons sold in Australia and New Zealand. In response, Australia’s consumer agency has asked stores to stop selling the suspect brands and some stores in New Zealand have pulled them from the shelves. Australian customs authorities have halted all imports of crayons from China, source of the tainted products, and authorities in New Zealand are considering such a ban.

“The American people deserve the same health-protective policies that New Zealand and 55 other countries already have in place. It’s absurd that we continue to allow asbestos to come into the United States," Sarah Grantham, a policy analyst at EWG Action Fund said.
New Zealand to Ban Imports of Asbestos-Containing Products

In a move to protect the public health of its citizens, New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment announced this week that it will end importation of asbestos-containing products. Although shipments of raw asbestos have been banned by New Zealand for years, certain potentially dangerous products made with asbestos have been allowed until now.
